Curly Girl Method

So I have naturally curly hair, which I have a love/hate relationship with.  It's dry, frizzy and has a mind of it's own most of the time.  My mom recently went to a wedding of one of my cousin's kids and saw another cousins daughter who has curly hair that was really cute and adorable and it looked spot on curly and cute, so she asked how she did it, and it got me thinking about the "Curly Girl Method" again.....I used to do it a while back but just fell out of touch with it.  So I've been 'obsessed' over the past few days to say the least.

This is my hair "non" curly girl method, the only product that I use that is CGM approved it the Suave Naturals Conditioner
You can find it here:  https://amzn.to/3wwVCBV

I don't use shampoo, I 'cowash' only.  Then I have been using the "Aussie" curl enhancing oil, then their 2nd day refresh, and mousse.  As you can see, my hair totally isn't loving the products.  So I did a ton of research and found a routine that I'm loving so far.   Keep reading for results and my 'new' routine line up.

Here is my hair on Wash Day Curly Girl Method:

`100% difference!  I'm totally in love with it and loving the results.  This is just after 1 day of it!

Here's my Wash Day (2-3 x a week) process:

1x a week Deep Condition with this: SheaMoisture Intensive Hydration Hair Masque Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil  or this: Garnier Fructis Avocado Hair Mask How I do it is wet hair thoroughly, apply, leave on for 5 minutes, comb through with a wide tooth comb.  My hair LOVES this process, this deep conditioner has protein in it so if your hair is anything like mine and favors protein you will love this too.

1x a month I clarify my hair with Twist Hit Reset Light Clarifying Shampoo.  This helps remove any product buildup I may have/get in the process.

CoWash with As I am Coconut CoWash  Work product in along scalp with fingers or I love the tangle teezers brush for this, it gives your head a nice massage and I find it cleanses the scalp well and helps with product build up.  Allow water to rinse cowash from hair completely.

Apply leave in conditioner in shower (do not rinse this out).  Using my fingers I apply my leave in conditioner, applying about a quarter size to my entire hair, focusing on the ends, with just a small amount on the roots.

I will gently squish while my hair is sopping wet to distribute the leave in conditioner.

Shower done!  Then I step out of the shower LEAVING my hair SOPPING wet!  It will style better this way,  TRUST the process!

Styling My Hair:

Wash Day Styling Protocol:

Take a pea sized amount of Cantu Curl Activator Cream & 2 Pumps of LUS Love UR Curls All in One for Curly Hair Styler  Emulsify with a small amount of water, and apply to hair by roping.

Run a small amount of cool water onto a Wet Brush or Denman Brush and brush hair to distribute products

Lightly scrunch hair with hands to encourage clumping while tilting head from side to side.

Apply quarter sized amount of emulsified Mop Top Curly Hair Custard to ends by roping and smooth over crown.

Scrunch hair from side to side.

Apply a quarter sized amount of Aussie Instant Freeze Gel into wet hands to emulsify gel.  Apply by roping.

Scrunch hair from side to side.

At this point I plop my hair in a old cotton t-shirt and apply my makeup and get dressed.

Then I remove t-shirt and pixie diffuse my hair.  This is the diffuser I have: Hairizone Universal Diffuser, it has worked great for me for years.  A lot of curly girls love this one as well:  Xtavia Black Diffuser.  You want to pixie diffuse your hair to be about 80% dry.

Then you will Apply a dime sized amount of emulsified Aussie Instant Freeze Gel with wet hands (this is called the smasters technique)

Continue Pixie Diffusing hair until fully dry

Now I finish my morning routine (breakfast, get my daughter ready for school, read emails, feed the critters etc) usually give the 'gel cast' about an hour or two to set before I SOTC (Scrunch out the Crunch).  What this means is I will scrunch my hair with dry hands to scrunch out the gel cast in my dry hair.

If I have extra time I will apply Root Clips for about 10 Minutes to help with volume

Sleeping on my curly hair:

I sleep in a satin sleep bonnet to protect my curls

My hair isn't long enough for a pineapple yet.

I also have a satin pillow case in case my sleep bonnet falls off.

Some people use buffs to sleep in as well.  Which may work better if you have longer hair.

Refresh Routine for Day 2 & Day 3 Hair:
These pictures are for day 2 hair with a wet refresh routine which I will detail below:

I remove my satin bonnet and let my hair settle for about 10 or so minutes.

Wet hair using the bowl method.

Scrunch soaking wet hair with wet hands

Emulsify a quarter sized amount of Aussie Instant Freeze Gel in wet hands

Apply by roping and squishing.

Plop hair in old cotton t-shirt while applying makeup and getting dressed

Pixie diffuse dry hair until 80% dry

Apply a dime sized amount of Aussie Instant Freeze Gel  in wet hands

Finish diffuse drying hair until 100% dry.

ONLY on 3rd Day Hair I do the following.

Rub a dime sized amount of Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie & 1 pump of

Smooth on wet strands by roping, squish into dripping wet hair

Emulsify a quarter sized amount of Aussie Instant Freeze Gel in wet hands

Apply by roping and squishing.

Plop hair in old cotton t-shirt while applying makeup and getting dressed

Pixie diffuse dry hair until 80% dry

Apply a dime sized amount of Aussie Instant Freeze Gel  in wet hands

Finish diffuse drying hair until 100% dry.

This is the routine I am starting with my Curly Girl Method as of May 9th, 2024, as I learn what my hair likes/dislikes this routine/products may change, I will update this post as that happens.  If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me via email @ deejays.mom99@gmail.com or DM me on instagram @ waiting.4.sunshine

🌿 CBD and Hormones: What Every Woman Should Know

Posted in The Wellness Den | June 14, 2025 Let’s be real: being a woman comes with a lot of hormonal ups and downs. Mood swings. Fatigue. Bloating. Brain fog. Anxiety. Sleep issues.
