How do you eat an elephant?

So today I am feeling very overwhelmed.  Was stuck at work a little late waiting for someone to come pick up their puppy, so I got home later and got to come home to a great big huge mess in my kitchen, my cat Munchie knocked over last nights dinner pan which was chicken in a honey sauce so a good 1/2 an inches worth of ooey gooey mess all over my kitchen floor which is carpeted.  Munchie has learned how to jump on my stove and counters and he lives up to his name, he loves to eat and gets into trouble.  So he got on the stove and knocked it off today.  Mind you Munchie has bad hips, bad knees and 1 bad front leg.....time to cut back his pain meds LOL.    Hubby told me that the mess easily avoidable by putting it in the sink, well I'm bipolar so my sink was already full of dishes that were soaking........then I had to come up with something for dinner, have a #10 headache and the pain medication isn't working today.  I broke down in tears in my hubby's arms.  He told me to take it one step at a time.  It reminded me of a quote I learned when I was partially hospitalized "How do you eat an elephant, one bite at a time."

Luckily we had a few leftovers in our fridge for dinner so that took that off of my plate.  Hubby told me to get the ooey gooey off the carpet then soak the carpet in hand towels soaked in hot water to help break it up then I am going to go clean with our mini carpet cleaner.  I get overwhelmed with everything.  I hate being bipolar as it makes it so hard to function sometimes and doing dishes which may come easy to some people is an enormous task for me sometimes.  I guess I just need to bite the bullet and come home and do dishes every night.  Not what I would 'like' to do but it's what I need to to get control of my house again so I don't have the stove and counters piled high with dishes.  If I do dishes every day it won't get this bad.  Sometimes I wish there were more hours in the day so I can snuggle with the hubby and have time to keep the house clean and dishes done and other chores that I need to do.  Just getting home from work at 6 or 7pm and I have to be in bed by 9:30 or I am too groggy in the mornings, so there is limited time when I get home from work and really want to spend time with the honey.  I will just have to make our weekends all the more special and do what I can to maintain the house better.

I see my new counselor tomorrow and I am beyond nervous.  I don't like to talk to people about my problems, but I know it is something that needs to be done.  I have been using an app on my tablet on my lunches to read more about depression and CBT training.  It has been somewhat helpful refreshing my mind about the CBT changing the way I think.

  1. it's nice to read so many different stories that primarily show they have supportive spouses. i would be lost without mine. i don't know how he puts up with me, i get so very tired most of the time. it's hard to remember a time when i was still working! we moved here almost 7 years ago and i went full time housewife. tough job, more than i thought it would be and it was before i was diagnosed. what is CBT training? i've read and researched a lot of things but i've never seen that mentioned or i just don't recognize these initials. thanks for writing :) have a good day!

  2. CBT is essentially changing the way that you think. http://www2.nami.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Inform_Yourself/About_Mental_Illness/About_Treatments_and_Supports/Cognitive_Behavioral_Therapy1.htm It helps challenge irrational beliefs that you have and helps to restructure your way of thinking.
